Prenatal Care In our Cozy Spokane Valley Office

The Initial Prenatal Visit occurs at the start of your care with us, as early as 8-12 weeks gestation. During this visit we go over your medical history with you, discuss the unique nutritional and supplemental needs of pregnancy, draw labs, and then do our physical assessment. The physical assessment includes checking your blood pressure, temperature and pulse, getting your weight, measuring and palpating your belly, and finally the most anticipated part: listening to your baby’s heartbeat. This appointment is one hour, giving us ample time to do all the “first visit” things, as well as answer any questions you may have.
Regular Prenatal Visits are done every 3 weeks until 35 weeks and then are weekly until your baby is born. These appointments are approximately 45 minutes, giving us ample time to do our physical assessment (see above) as well as time spent getting to know each other, reviewing labs and/or ultrasound results from the previous visit. We also spend time answering your questions and going over TRUE informed consent on upcoming testing. You see each midwife an equal amount of time that way you have a relationship with your team.
There is so much that goes into preparing for a healthy pregnancy and postpartum, and we truly value this unique time spent growing with you.

labor & birth

What does Labor & Birth look like with a Midwife?

During early labor we are in contact as often as needed to answer any questions or to give tips on early labor. Our team, including 1-2 licensed midwives, a student and/or a birth assistant, comes to you once active labor starts. We monitor you and baby as often as needed and wherever you are. There are no required IVs or cervical exams, with the freedom to labor however you choose and the freedom to birth however and wherever you want.

After the birth we protect that 1st golden hour of bonding. While keeping a close eye from afar on mom and baby, we chart and clean up any mess that is left over. The newborn exam is done on the bed where everyone can see and be involved. Discharge happens 2-5 hours after birth, when mom and baby are both clinically stable and you’re ready to go to sleep.

postpartum

Postpartum may be the most important part of your journey

After we tuck you into bed with your brand new babe, we come back to your home at 24-48 hrs postpartum to do your first appointment. During this visit we check vitals on you and baby, do the Critical Congenital Heart Disease Screening (CCHD) and Newborn Metabolic Screen (heel poke/NBS) for baby, as well as footprints on a Keepsake Footprint Certificate. We talk about how everything is going and what to expect over the next few days. We spend extra time helping you with breastfeeding if you are struggling, and weigh baby to get a baseline for weight loss.

At 3-4 days postpartum, we offer another in-home visit for a weight check with one of our team members, placenta pill drop-off and check-in on how everything is going. Within the first week, we send Megan Macy, CLC @themilklady out to provide an in-home lactation counselor visit to help with any breastfeeding challenges and answer any questions you may be have. At 1 weeks postpartum you come back to the office for your first outing and check up. We do vitals on both you and baby, as well as the second Newborn Metabolic Screen on baby. We see you again in office Week 2, 3, 4, and 5 which gives us a chance to see our lovely moms and babies and check-in to see how you are adjusting to life with a new baby. We whole heartedly believe in providing the best care for postpartum.

By the time your week 6 appointment rolls around, you and your babe are ready for what we lovingly refer to as graduation from care. This is a time for us to talk about your birth, see how much your baby has gained, and do a final vitals check on you and baby. One last photo at our graduation wall, and we’re tearfully sending you off into the real-world. We hope to then see you at all of the in person groups, and we love to hear how you and your family are doing.

We want you to feel and have the most supported 4th trimester, and look forward to offering regular mom groups, playdates in the park, and an annual reunion gathering of our families (date/time/location to be announced).
